HOOKED RUGS AND HISTORIC COVERLETS ON DISPLAY AT SAMA LIGONIER
LIGONIER– The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier is excited to announce its latest exhibition, A Celebration of Texture and Pattern: Hooked Rugs and Historic Coverlets, on display August 16 through October 27. Ligonier native Barb Carroll is a local hooked rug expert with a passion for antique coverlets.
Carroll has always admired coverlets on display at the National Museum of the American Coverlet (Coverlet Museum) and has now partnered with them to create this amazing exhibition pairing modern hooked rugs with historic coverlets.
Since the Industrial Revolution in America, coverlets have been forgotten by many. Before the Industrial Revolution, household items were woven by hand. Coverlets were no exception being hand spun with hand dyed yarns, signed and dated and were considered a showpiece for the weavers.
This exhibition will feature historic coverlets paired with modern hooked rugs inspired by the colorful and graphic patterned original “period” coverlets from the Coverlet Museum.
A reception will be held Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will also be a Lunch a L’Art, with the artist, on Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. To make reservations for either the reception or Lunch a L’Art, or any other programming opportunities, please call (724) 238-6015 or email [email protected].
The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley is located on One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South in Ligonier. Business hours are 10a.m. to 5p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1p.m. to 5p.m. on weekends. The Museum is handicap-accessible. The Museum is open to the public free of charge.
